| Farewell Mayo I first heard this song whilst in donegal, some ten years ago. It was written by Eamon Freil, of County Derry. About his childhood holidays in County Mayo. It has been a favorite of mine ever since. I have sung this song quite alot, in Mayo. Where it always gets a great welcome. The feeling of Mayo is very well captured in the last verse, with its scenes, silence and beauty. A great county! Bonnywood Green I collected this song from the late Billy Moore, of Connor village just outside Ballymena County Antrim. Billy travelled around Ireland, like many of us, collecting songs, tunes and stories. I was lucky enough to live beside him for awhile. And got to know the area in and around Ballymena. Woodgreen is only a stones throw from Connor and Kells, and is more of a townland I suppose. This is another favorite of mine, because I can relate to the area of which it"s about thanks to Billy, many songs have been passed on, to be kept alive, and enjoyed. The Cartwheel The first tune, The Cartwheel is not the orginal name. As often happens with tunes, they get mixed up. And part of the fun in playing them, is trying to remember afterwards the correct name. I was going to add quitar to this track but, thought Martin and Jennifer done such a nice version, on harp and flute. The instruments compliment each other so well, and six strings more would be to much. |
